Rehabilitation Program

Road to Redemption

At Redemption Ranch, every rescue marks the beginning of a second chance. Rescued from across the Virgin Islands and the mainland United States, our horses arrive in varying states of physical and emotional trauma. Some come from neglectful homes or kill pens. Others have been starved, overworked, or simply abandoned and forgotten. No matter their history, each horse is met with patience, compassion, and the promise of a better future

A Holistic Approach to Recovery

Rehabilitation begins the moment they step off the trailer. We welcome them with fresh water, rest, and gentle observation, assessing each horse’s needs before beginning a tailored recovery plan. Nutrition is foundational, as many arrive emaciated, with depleted mineral reserves and compromised digestive systems. We provide high-quality forage, carefully balanced feed, and individualized supplements to restore strength from the inside out.

Specialized Veterinary & Therapeutic Care:

True rehabilitation goes far beyond food and shelter. Many of our rescues require specialized medical attention due to chronic injuries, long-term neglect, or outdated training methods that caused physical breakdown. This is where our expert care comes in:

  • Veterinary Diagnostics

    • We partner with trusted equine vets for full workups, including blood panels, X-rays, dentistry needs, and ultrasound imaging when needed.
  • Farrier Services

    • Routine trims and shoeing every six weeks help correct imbalances, address long-neglected hoof issues, and support soundness.
  • Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Bodywork

    • Years of poor saddle fit, hard labor, or confinement can leave horses with spinal misalignments, tension, and pain. Regular chiropractic adjustments and musculoskeletal therapies help restore mobility and comfort.
  • Soft Tissue Rehabilitation

    • For horses with strained ligaments, atrophied muscles, or joint damage, we implement gentle movement routines, stretches, round pen work, and therapeutic treatments designed to rebuild strength without risking re-injury.

We’re also fortunate to be surrounded by the healing waters of the Caribbean Sea, which allows us to incorporate saltwater therapy into our rehabilitation plans. Carefully guided swims and controlled wading sessions in the ocean provide low-impact resistance that helps improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and ease joint stiffness, all while supporting emotional calm and confidence in the horses. It’s a powerful natural complement to our hands-on care and a reminder that healing can come from both science and nature.

Each horse’s rehabilitation timeline is different, and we never rush the process. Healing is never linear, but with time, consistency, and trust, we watch them reclaim strength no one thought they had left. We operate on their timeline, not ours. Always attuned to their comfort, boundaries, and unspoken cues. Progress is measured not by speed, but by the rebuilding of trust, the return of curiosity, and the quiet moments when a horse chooses connection again. Above all, we honor the horse; body, mind, and spirit, as they lead the way toward healing.

More Than Recovery

We don’t just restore their bodies, we help them rediscover their purpose. With time, consistency, and trust, we watch broken spirits transform. Once healthy, some go on to serve in our equine-assisted healing programs. Helping others heal from within. Others simply get to live the peaceful life they always deserved.

Here, rehabilitation is more than physical—it’s Redemption.

Rosebud

When we first found Rosebud, she was a ghost of the powerful race horse she once had been. Abandoned, skeletal, and nearly 300 pounds underweight, but with eyes that still managed to hold a spark of fight. Vets warned us she might not survive, her body was so weak that any sudden change in diet could be fatal. Refeeding a severely underweight horse is a delicate, dangerous process. If rushed, it can trigger refeeding syndrome, or laminitis, where the shock of nutrition or sudden weight gain after prolonged starvation could send the body’s system or hooves into collapse. Slowly, carefully, and with constant monitoring, we began the journey to bring her back.

Over weeks that turned to months, Rosebud steadily gained weight and strength. She began to lift her head higher. Her eyes turned bright and curious again. As the pounds returned, so did her personality: athletic, whip-smart, and definitely opinionated.

Today, Rosebud is the queen of her herd. Powerful, confident, and unafraid to let everyone know who’s boss. She gallops with a fluid grace, end has work ethic that never quits. She knows where she came from, and her scars, both physical and emotional, are part of her story, but they do not define her.

Rosebud is strong. Rosebud is powerful. And above all, Rosebud is loved.

Ranger

Ranger’s past is a harsh reminder of how quickly a horse can be forgotten. Once a prized show horse, he gave everything in the arena until his rider lost interest and left him behind. Passed from hand to hand and eventually discarded in a kill pen, Ranger arrived to us exhausted, sore, and neglected — his body worn down from years of overwork and little care.

We knew he deserved better. His rehabilitation began with a careful program of chiropractic work, massage therapy, and much-needed rest to ease years of strain. Slowly, he began to trust again, moving with freedom and rediscovering what it meant to simply be a horse.

Today, Ranger is thriving as one of our steadiest trail partners. Confident, calm, and willing, he safely carries new riders down the trail, proving every day that second chances matter.

Spirit

Spirit came to us from a Texas kill pen, a far cry from his earlier days being ridden through the busy streets of downtown Fort Worth. When he arrived, he was weak and battling pneumonia, his body worn down and his future uncertain. Still, even in that state, there was a quiet kindness about him that stood out.

With careful medical treatment, rest, and steady support, Spirit recovered and began to show who he truly was: an incredibly safe, gentle horse with a remarkable gift for working with people.

Today, Spirit is one of our most trusted therapy partners. He carries kids and individuals with special needs with complete patience and calm, offering them confidence and peace. Spirit’s steady nature has made him a true star in our program — the kind of horse you can trust with anyone, every single time.

Titan

Titan was just 18 months old when he landed in a kill pen, discarded for not having the “right” look to make it in the show ring. Still practically a baby, he came to Redemption Ranch with a blank slate and an uncertain future.

Growing up here, Titan absolutely thrived. With steady handling, trust-building, and time to develop, he blossomed into an exceptional partner. Today, he is the cornerstone of our equine-assisted healing programs, meeting participants exactly where they are and helping them find the breakthroughs they need in the round pen.

Titan is also a reliable, steady trail horse who truly seems to love his work. Confident, honest, and willing, he shows every day that a horse no one wanted can become the horse everyone counts on.

Transformations

Life changing. Seriously, Ashley and Titan changed my life. Realized I shouldn’t be ashamed of what I did, I should be proud. I do deserve to relax and appreciate the things I’ve accomplished. Everytime I meet someone and talk about my past, I say there is the meanest nice woman named Ashley that made me look deeeeeep inside myself and answer some dark questions. Made me see the world in a new light.

It’s so interesting to notice the small changes in [him] after the sessions. I’ve been having trouble sleeping again recently. After yesterday’s encounter with Spirit I slept until 8:30am this morning!”

The mission behind the ranch is so much more than animal rescue that just supporting this organization is a great way to give back. On top of that they offer different experiences including feeding Zebras (!), swimming with ponies and confronting your fears with equine coaching. I tried all three and came out learning new things about myself as well as having the experience of a lifetime. Highly recommend!

“I’m a veterinarian. Along with that I grew up with horses, so naturally I have a respect, admiration, and a feel for them. Because of my background, I had heard about equine-assisted therapy. I had never participated in it, but thought “I just want to see what this is like so I’m more educated.” I wasn’t really planning on getting anything personal out of it other than some quality time with one of God‘s beautiful creatures. Oh, pride and naivety.
